After months of having to leash up my dog and bundle up for frigid temps or slip and slide on icy walks, I began to dream of spring. If I can hang in there, I'm coming up on some pretty good dog days. The walking will be good from 8am to 8pm, and right now, it fills my dreams.
It’s adventure time. I'm putting together a bag with towels, a water bowl and poop bags. Soon, it will be time to leash up my dogs, leave the sidewalks behind and find welcoming trails and open dog-parks and maybe a creek!
Here are some of my ideas for a doggy get-away in the Piedmont.
Country Park
3905 Nathanael Greene Drive, Greensboro, NC 27455 https://www.greensboro-nc.gov/home/showdocument?id=40568
If your dog likes taking a long stroll to smell and explore like mine do, this might be the place.
There are five miles of trails within the park. There is also an off-leash dog-park within Country Park, called Bark Park.
*Dogs are required to be on their leashes unless inside the dog park.
*Dogs cannot swim in the lakes or ride in the paddle boats
*During the week, you can drive to the entrance of the dog park on the loop road from 8 am – 4:15 pm.
*In the evenings and on the weekends, dog park visitors are recommended to parking at the Science Center Parking, Jaycee Parking lot or Ormand Road Parking lot
*The closest parking lot to the dog park on weekends and evenings is Jaycee Parking Lot. *Weekend number 336/430-6562 for access to the handicap parking lot by the dog park.

If you like getting back to nature with dogs in tow, where the grass is tall, the trees are large, and the hiking trails wind, this might be just what you need.
Southwest Park is 513 acres situated along side Randleman Lake.
*Dog-park within, but it’s on the wilder side. Bring your own poop bags.
*Unless inside the dog park, dogs must be on a leash.
* When on your way, use 3403 Wall Road for GPS purposes.
*Swimming is not allowed unless you’re a duck. However, if you own a kayak, canoe, or john-boat, or if you’d like to rent one while you’re there, you are welcome to paddle your pooch around.
*The park is closed Mondays and Tuesdays.
Tanglewood Dog Park
4061 Clemmons Rd Clemmons, NC (336)703-6405 https://www.forsyth.cc/parks/dog_park.aspx
There is an off-leash dog park, but this is also a great place to take a long walk with your dog on-leash.
*There is a dog park for off leash fun, Tanglewoof, that’s 2.35 acres.
*Tanglewoof is divided into small dogs/large dogs.
*Dog park provides water fountains for both people and their dogs. Benches are also located along the perimeter fencing along with trash receptacles and dog waste stations.

If your dog is perfectly happy on a leash and loves a good walk, try Salem Lake or Miller Park. I use these for a quick getaway.
*Salem Lake is for the hiker dog and owner. Lots of trees and wildlife.
*It’s seven miles around the lake.
*Miller Park is also loaded with trees and has winding trails for a short trek.
*Neither of these parks have an off-leash area, and it’s best to have poop bags with you if you venture to either of these parks.
Hedgecock Dog Park
300 W. Parris Ave. High Point, NC (336) 883-3111
https://www.highpointnc.gov/facilities/facility/details/Hedgecock-Park-38
If you want to try a dog park but worry about the safety of your dog, try Hedgecock Dog Park.
*The dog park is housed within Hedgecock Park, and to use the dog park, you must register with the High Point Parks and Recreation Department, with proof of vaccinations.
*They have a strict set of rules including no children unsupervised or under the age of 10. *They have 2 areas, one for small dogs and one for larger dogs, watering stations, waste stations and shaded benches for dog owners.
Whether I choose a romp in the dog park, a leisurely stroll on a tree lined path, or a friends fenced in back yard, I'm looking forward to perfect wither for getting out there with my dogs.
